This started happening a few days ago. After using my PC for about 30 mins or so, my ethernet driver would automatically get disabled, and trying to enable it would not result in anything. If I was to do a restart, windows would get stuck at the log-off screen (with the spinning wheel and "Restarting" message). I would have to do a hard reset, and the issue would occur again some time after the reset.
I have uninstalled the driver and reinstalled the latest one from Intel.
This is a new PC, only about 3 weeks old. The specs are below:

Windows 10 Pro, 22H2, Build: 19045.3693
Gigabyte Aorus X670E Master (Ethener adapter: Intel I255, Wifi Adapter: RZ616 Wi-Fi 6E 160MHz)
Ryzen 7950X
2x 16gb GSkills Flare X5 DDR5 5600
Asus TUF RTX 3080
OS Drive: Samsung 990 Pro 1tb

Thanks in advance for any help!

EDIT to include the updates that I have found subsequently:
  1. I have disabled power management option where the adapter could be switched off to conserve power
  2. The issue happens when I use Wifi connection as well. After a while, the wifi adapter will also get disabled
  3. I viewed the System event logs, and have identified the errors where the Ethernet and Wifi adapters were disabled:
    1. Ethernet: Source: e2fexpress, Event ID: 27
    2. Wifi: Source: mtkwlex, Event ID: 5002
  4. Googling the above errors, I have found people using different MB but with the same adapters facing the same issues.

Update: The issue was due to the Windows Power Options, which I set to Power Saver.
Changing the plan back to Balanced solved the issue.

I tweaked some of the specific settings to match the Power Saver settings I need, but that does not affect the adapters. I guess it's the Power Saver plan specifically that was causing the problem.

It's been a week and the adapters are working fine. Hopefully this helps anyone else who might face the same issue.
Gigabyte Aorus X670E Master
BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time?

Try uninstalling the device From Device Manager or removing the driver from Start>Control Panel>Uninstall a program and then manually reinstalling the latest NIC driver in an elevated command, i.e, Right click installer>Run as Administrator.

Out of curiosity, was the OS recycled from an older build/platform?

Thanks for the reply.
My bios version is F12, released in Jul 2023.

I have uninstalled the driver from device manager and reinstalled it. The issue is still happening.
Not sure if this is relevant but every time I turn off the power to the PC completely after shutting down, the next bootup will take much longer, and the bios will usually reset (bios clock will be off, XMP disabled...etc).

Could this be an issue of a CMOS battery acting funny?

I went into Device Manager, and opened the Properties window of the Ethernet adapter. Under Power Management, I unchecked the option "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
Recently I put my CPU on Eco mode and also changed the power consumption settings in Windows. This might have been the culprit.

I will update the thread if there is any changes either way.

Update: After changing the power management option for the ethernet adapter, it is still getting auto-disabled.

Is there a way that I can find a log to see what is doing the disabling?

Start by installing a new CMOS battery.

Look in Reliability History/Moniter for error codes, warnings, and informational events.

You can also use Event Viewer for the same purpose,. However Event Viewer requires more time and effort to navigate and understand.

Thanks for the info. I'll change the CMOS battery, though I suspect it will only help with the issue of the BIOS reset when I power down completely, and not the Ethernet driver issue.

A few more updates:
  1. My MB has built-in wifi (RZ616 Wi-Fi 6E 160MHz ). I just started using Wifi after the last post. Turned out, the wifi adapter faces the exact same problem - i.e. being disabled after using for a while. So it seems that this is not an issue specific to the motherboard
  2. I viewed the System event logs, and have identified the errors where the Ethernet and Wifi adapters were disabled:
    1. Ethernet: Source: e2fexpress, Event ID: 27
    2. Wifi: Source: mtkwlex, Event ID: 5002

This is what I got from running the ipconfig command. The Ethernet adapter is currently disabled but Wifi is still working.
