Question Ethernet device not showing up in Device Manager, attempt to install driver fails ?

In the process of building a machine, finally got it mostly working, but now I can't get the ethernet to work!

When I plug a cable in, it gets all blinky like it's working, but no ethernet connection shows up in Network Adapters or Device Manager, even with hidden devices shown.

In the BIOS, "Onboard LAN Controller" is showing up as enabled.

I went to the motherboard's website and tried to download and install the Intel LAN driver that it recommends, but the Intel installer fails with the error "Cannot install drivers. No Intel(R) Adapters are present in this computer." All Google searching has accomplished is showing me that other people have gotten this error, but no idea what to do about it. Any suggestions?
