Hi, I have been trying to figure out how to get the Ethernet port in the bedrooms of my townhouse to work but i cant figure it out. there is a room on the main level below the stairs where the router and all the cables that are but i cant figure out how to activate the Ethernet ports in the bed rooms. please someone help me!

Solution

If you have coaxial cable internet then this could apply. If ports aren't working at all with the correct RJ45 cables into these wall jacks in the bedrooms (that are NOT smaller RJ13 phone jacks), then that is something that an electrician or contractor would...
If none of them work with various computers and cables, I think you may need to call your ISP to activate the ports if they never worked. If the ethernet (and hopefully these are not smaller phone jacks!) are already built, the wiring may be already done for you.

the Ethernet port in the living room works but the ones in the bedrooms do not. i think the Ethernet ports in the bedrooms are not connected to my router but i do not know which cables to connect to my router

i did that and it still didnt work

If you have coaxial cable internet then this could apply. If ports aren't working at all with the correct RJ45 cables into these wall jacks in the bedrooms (that are NOT smaller RJ13 phone jacks), then that is something that an electrician or contractor would have to handle getting those ports live. All the cable company deals with is the coaxial cabling. I was actually misinformed on that, it seems you would essentially be doing a cabling run to these installed wall jacks. So that being said here are 4 options from cheapest to most expensive:

1. Get some long ethernet cords and do some drilling through walls. Cheapest way to get a cable to where it needs to go without doing cables taped to the floor.

2. Use wireless internet for the bedrooms. If you already have a home router with built in wireless, all you'd have to do is get wireless adapters for the bedroom computers.

3. Use a powerline adapter like https://www.newegg.ca/Powerline-Networking/SubCategory/ID-294 and your bedroom wall outlets. They send your internet signals over your power line. Less performance I find but good if wireless is a no go

4. Call an electrician and get them to do the cabling run. I'm assuming everything on your end is plugged in correctly also and connected to the wall. The most costly solution but bedroom Ethernet is very nice.

Solution
Your first step is to try to find which wire goes to the bedroom. If they are not marked then it will be quite a challenge. You may have to buy a inexpensive wire locator.

The most common cause of ports not to work is someone did not wire them correctly or much less likely the wires have become loose over time.

Take the wall plates off and make sure the wires follow the 568a or 568b standard. You need to verify that the ports in the closet have the same wire pattern. There are inexpensive testing tools that will verify the wires are in the correct positions. You generally can pull the wires out of a jack cut off a very small amount and punch them back down if they are not.
