Question Ethernet Port in Every Room?

I recently moved into a new build 3 bedroom in the UK and we've got ethernet ports in every room that look like this

In the main cupboard, next to the router we have 3 ports on the wall that look like this

I tried plugging PC into the bedroom port and then all 3 cupboard ports into the router but stil get nothing. Am I missing something here? I'm sure I've lived in places in the past where this just worked.

I'm assuming the router has a 4 port switch on it. So yes, if it's wired correctly, you did nothing wrong. That's how it should work.

Can you try the PC on the other ports of you house, perhaps they crimped one wrong. Many times, the guys that wire these homes are electricians and not IT professionals. So they screw up ethernet all the time.

Could you take a pic of the white Openreach unit, I should be able to figure out which model it is. I can see a grey cable…that can and should be replaced with a decent Ethernet, if you have one. The engineers always leave those older style ones behind, but they aren’t good for achieving optimum speeds. Generally your connections will have been activated for port 1, or port 2. Are there any lights on the Openreach unit, and what lights are showing on your hub?

Wicked thanks, so that’s a Nokia ONT (fibre modem) and all looks good….all the Sky hub lights look green are they on steadily? Generally the port light flashing is no issue..normally I’d say unplug and reinsert the Ethernet connecting Openreach box and the Sky hub, but the lights are all as should be. That said, it’s worth removing the power cable from the Openreach unit, waiting a few seconds and then plugging back in. What are your devices showing, is the network coming up but no internet, or is it not appearing at all?

all wifi works totally fine its just running an ethernet cable from the port in the bedroom that doesnt work. It shows nothing, as if the cable isnt connected. The ethernet cables conneted directly to the router work fine

Ah, I get ya. So, what’s happened is the property developer must have sold the data points as optional extras, when selling the house…so none of those Ethernet ports are live...I’d contact the company and see how much they charge for em, could be better off buying powerline adapters or a mesh system like the Sky boosters. But I’d expect getting those Ethernet live would be better value

Yeah, they seem to be installed as standard in all new builds nowadays, but to actually use the, is an add-on……stingy b*stards. Might be cheaper to get a sparky round yourself rather than them charge you for the pleasure
