Ethernet Port Not Blinking

I am a total noob here so bear with me.

I built a pc recently and installed the OS. When I connected the ethernet cable, it doesn't have any reaction, not a blink or change in the icon.

But if I connect a Wi-Fi modem to that port it then works fine.

Not sure that I am following the connectivity in your post.

When you run an ethernet cable from the computer's ethernet port (is that built in or a separate card?) to the router (or somewhere) the result is no network connectivity.

But if you run the ethernet cable from the computer's ethernet port to the "wifi modem" then you are on your network - correct? Or just the internet?

Can you diagram out or further explain the connections: non-working and working?

Can you run ipconfig /all when non-working and working?

the Ethernet port on the desktop side will only blink if it has a physical connection to another device and both devices are powered on. If the port doesn't light up at all it is usually a physical issue or power issue on either side.

I believe the port does have to be enabled as well, so technically you could disable software side on the desktop the Ethernet port and it wouldn't light up...haven't tested it though but seems likely.

So I have been troubleshooting which is at fault here. I've tried directly connecting the ethernet port (from the mb) without a router. That's when it could not detect. But if i put a router in between, it now detects it but with no connectivity. It should have connection because i can use the wifi from that same router.

Your setup should most likely be this:

ISP ------> modem[Ethernet port] --------ethernet cable -------->[WAN port] Router [LAN Port] -------ethernet cable ---------> Ethernet port on Motherboard

Note: Make and model of the modem and the router would be useful information.

So if the computer is connecting wirelessly via the router then the computer's wired ethernet adapter is probably not configured correctly. (Trusting that the ethernet cable is good.)

Can you run and post the results from the computer's "ipconfig /all"?

And also, following DeadlyDays post, try some known working ethernet cables. Need to be sure that you are not dealing with some physical connection problem.
