Hey everyone I have a question regarding the ethernet port that is found behind my cable box. On the top of it, it says wireless receiver. The thing is, is that I recently built a new computer with an ac wifi card and the internet connection isn't that good do to my pc being up stairs and my modem being down. I was wondering if anyone has tried plugging there ethernet cable from pc to the back of a cable box with ethernet port for dircect connection. I've heard of people saying it doesn't work but I've noticed my download and upload speed jump dramtically after testing out the connection on a test connection website. Also when I download world of warcraft I'm getting download speeds up to almost 10 mb/s.

One of the other things I wanted to know is if it is illegal for me to use that port as another spot to access the internet via ethernet connection.

Sorry this is long, thank you to anyone taking the time to read all of this.

Are you Talking about an at&t wireless receiver that you put in another room so you don't have to use coax cable? I think its called a U-verse? If that's what your talking about then no its in no way illegal, you pay for the service and probably paid for the wireless receiver too.
The connection could be better depending on a few circumstances like how close is the at&t device upstairs to your wireless access point or gateway downstairs. If its close or i should say "in range" but the room the computer is in is out of "range" or on the edge of your range then yes connecting an Ethernet cable to the back of the U-verse should help.
Remember your wireless U-verse is still limited by its own wireless connection (the same technology is limiting your computers wireless connection). Wireless connections will only go so fast. So for true faster speed I would try and connect your computer directly to your modem with a CAT 6 cable.

Okay yeah I see what you're saying about being in range. And yes it's Uverse. Wish I would've thought about using the ethernet port behind box before buying an a/c wireless card since I probably won't use it that much anyways.

Yeah I wasn't sure if I would get in trouble for using that port since when the guy came to install it he said that the signal upstairs would be weak. Which kinda makes me wonder why he didn't think to suggest me to use the Ethernet port in the back of box if he knew I might have problems with internet signal.

Not to say it doesn't work or that it's slow per se when it comes to just browsing or loading Youtube videos. But when I go into online gaming in particular, I tend to have connection issues to the point that I get kicked out of games.

Anyways thanks for helping me sort this out I really appreciate the feedback. 😀
