[SOLVED] Ethernet speed slower than advertised

Our carrier advertised us 500mb/s but on my PC I'm only getting 5-9Mb/s. I'm using a cat5e cable (20m) directly plugged into a gigabyte port on my PC, which is connected to a gigabyte switch which is then connected to our router . I'm not sure as to how to fix this and would love any tips give.
(sorry for any mistakes, since this is my first post)

yeah multiple and they all range form 5-9 mb/s up and down

I would try a new cable.

OK, disregard the numbers you get from Steam.

But from speedtest.net?
If that is actually what you get doing that test, I'd suspect a faulty ethernet cable.

Another question: make and model switch?

Are you able to run a test bypassing the switch: i.e., by using a longer ethernet cable or by temporarily moving the PC?

Just a matter of elimination.....

the switch is the TL-SG105E 5 port switch. although bypassing the switch sped it up to about 50mb/s.
thank you very much for the solution. this isn't the 100mb/s that my motherboard can take but im still happy.
