I have a BT Hub 5 and every night without fail the ethernet stops working at 2:30 am and doesnt come back on until 6 am. For many people this would not be a problem as they are asleep but i work nights and on my rest days i like to play online and relax.

It is not a problem that just affects my pc, but also my ps4, tv, steam link and sky go box.

It has only been hapening for the past month but due to the location of the devices it is not practical to have them connected by wifi as the signal is too weak for anything other than web browsing.

Solution
I would agree if possible factory reset the router and reconfigure it. The default settings should not have any restrictions on traffic.

If someone came to this forum and ask how to do this I would tell them it was not likely possible. There are routers you can place restrictions on usage based on time of day. The thing that most routers can not do is place limits based on if the traffic is wireless or wired. Most only allow restrictions based on ip/mac address.

The only other thing I could see is if you had a switch or something that was going into power save mode but it would not be at specific time of day.
There is likely a setting in the advanced settings or admin settings of your router that affects this. Could even be in the parental settings. If you are the owner/parent of said router, you should have access to those settings. It will either be a "stay off at this time" setting or a "reset router at XXX time setting" most likely.

If you do not have access to those settings, then you are probably not supposed to. If you do, then post the exact model of the router and I'll see if I can find anything in the router's manual, or you can look to find it as well.

Could be another reason/cause, but I'd start there first and then branch out towards other possibilities.

Some routers have these so parents can keep kids off the internet during hours they don't want them on it. If you have recently updated the router firmware, the setting could have changed by default.

Yes, you are right. I didn't even consider that the wireless still worked, so it couldn't be one without the other. Great point.

If it was the other way around I'd say maybe there was another piece of equipment or an appliance that was coming on at night and affecting the frequency being used for the wireless connection, but with the ethernet being the problem that's something far out of the ordinary. I don't think a QOS setting could affect that. Maybe there is actually something software related ON the operating system that is to blame?

I have tried a factory reset and the issue is still there. I used to use the port forwarding for steam as i have two brothers who also use it, when i removed it back to its default setting, this started shortly after but i cant see how it can be related and all the time restrictions have never been used.

Another thing i have noticed is the pc is showing up as a wireless device and not an ethernet one. I only connect to the wireless when the ethernet is down.

There are two switches between the BT Hub and my pc, both in the same room, however i have used these for a year now and this problem has been happening for about a month.

Try eliminating the switches, connect ethernet directly between your PC and the router, and see if the problem persists. Likely this will require powering off, move the cable from your PC/switch to your PC/router, then start up. At least then you will know if the switches are a factor.

Resetting everything, hard reset of router or switches is usually a good place to start too.

His DCHP leave could be set to expire every day at 02:30 , maybe some sort of weird wait times are in play to only assign 1 IP per hour. I would definitely hope on and take a look at the config for the router

I reset both the switches again before I was going to take them out and connect the pc to the Hub, the case is 22kg by itself so it was easier to atleast try and it worked this time (i dont know why it didnt before but it is working now. Thanks for everyones help.
