Hi,

I currently want another ethernet port, in my renting apartment I'm given one, the connection is through a wall socket where I just plug in a ethernet cable to the pc thernet port and it works.

If I want 2 connections on that wall socket port, will it work if I just plug in a ethernet switch to the wall socket port and then 2 connections (pc and laptop) into the switch and it'll work?

Or is it not that simple?

Thanks in advance!

Most likely it will work. It all depends on how the apartment has things setup. Since apartment buildings are not ISP they generally have a router they share a internet connection between apartments. Since they use private ip addresses to do this they generally do not care how many devices you have.

If not you will need to use a router. This allows all your devices in your house to appear as a single device. It might be a good idea to use a router anyway. If the switch works this generally means all the devices in all the apartments can see each other. A virus or some bored teen could attack your equipment. With a router they can only see the router and not your end devices.
