Title pretty much says it but with excel 2007, when clicking on an ETX file, it would automatically open. Now with 2013, it fails to open. The only way to open it is to open excel first, then open the file through excel and do a text import or to open it in notepad and then paste it over.

Is there any way to have that import happen automatically? Thanks.

Is that file extension configured to be opened in Excel? Check the association. It may also be a security change in newer Excel versions.

An ETX file is not really an Excel file, it's just a text file.

It failed to save your changes or it failed to open properly when you tried it once you made the change? What exactly happened when you tried to change the ETX file to open with Excel.exe?

It may be that the newer version of Excel just can't deal with that file format automatically. Try using OpenOffice or LibreOffice spreadsheet see if those can do it.
