Solution
USB is digital, 3.5mm jack is analogue. You need to understand the difference between digital and analogue signals. The signal going into your headphones needs to be analogue, since this is what drives your speakers. However, the audio is created digitally in the PC program, so at some point is needs to converted from digital to analogue. When you use the jack on the back of your motherboard, you are using the built in digital-analogue-converter (DAC) of the motherboard. Motherboard DACs are fine, but separate ones generally tend to give better quality. These will take a digital signal from the PC via a USB cable, and give you the analogue signal via a 3.5mm jack that you can plug your headphones into.
For $100 The Kingston HyperX Cloud II.

Personally I run:
ASUS Essence ONE DAC $500
Monolith M560 Headphones (open/closed) $299 ($370 after import taxes)
MXL770 mic ($90)
Behringer 8 way mixer with Phantom power (for the mic) ($70)

If you can stretch however I'd look at Something like these with a modmic
If you really want to get into audio and have a fully immersive experience normal headphones seem a better way to go (in my opinion) I used to run various different headsets and nothing has compared to a good pair of headphones.

Find a US link for the headphones but they're a solid pair.

Well difference is between USB and 3.5mm is the USB includes a dac. I'd suggest changing the bitrate to the highest possible in windows if it doesn't already.

The big difference is where the sound is processed. Either way you'll be fine. I know alot of people that use a USB micro DAC specifically the Audioquest Dragonfly (black) 1.5
