first time i benchmarked all the (more common) browsers (except safari which i WILL NOT INSTALL on windows) on my system was last years october
acid3:
chrome 5 100/100
opera 10.61 100/100
firefox 3.6.8: 94/100
ie8: 20/100
and firefox and ie *still* don't manage to do that today... (i'll wait for the final versions of both and update the table later or so)
i'm running a c2quad q6600 at stock 2.4GHz with 4gb ram and a gf 8800gt - i keep testing chrome, opera, firefox and ie on html5test.com, acid3, v8 and sunspider 9 - all the results - if you're interested - can be found here: www.keksfabrik.eu/browsers (plain text)

Please be reminded all that Acid3 was written a great while ago; some features tested in it are now considered outdated and not worth the effort, which is why Firefox 4 won't score 100/100 either; and Webkit browsers scoring 100/100 actually implemented only the parts of specifications required to gain these points, not the whole features (as a matter offact, patches exist for Fx to score 100/100, but they were not included because deemed useless and actually dangerous for the web).

Moreover, there's a fewe elements missing in this:
- IE4 for *NIX was released and did work on platforms such as HP-UX etc. but was very unstable and didn't actually have the same features IE4/Win had

- IE5 for Mac OS had several releases, which were actually more feature-full and more advanced than IE5-6 on Windows: this is actually the browser that introduced doctype-switching for Quirks/Standard mode selection

- There was a IE 5.5 release for Windows: the last to support Windows 95, it also installed on Windows 98/SE and was shipped with Millenium. This is the rendering engine which is now emulated when using Quirks mode in IE 6/7/8/9.

[citation][nom]TheCapulet[/nom]Except that I have to load up firefox or IE to even post a comment. But this isn't as much Opera's fault. The TH website staff are terrible web devs.[/citation]

Actually, it's probably your fault. I post on Opera all the time, like this time. It's been working since I've moved to Opera.

i guess we know why his flat mate wat reluctant to let him use their computer... horseporn.net? seriously how did he not notice that before uploading the video? surely he watched the video after piecing it together...

aside from that, it's a nice history on IE.

I'm a chrome user now, though FF was my choice of poison for a while. Installed IE9 last night, like the new streamlined look, even more simple than chrome. I use IE for webmail to an MS server, it just looks better in IE. Also use it for RSS feeds, love the functionality of IE in that regard. Overall impressed with IE9 but I never understood why people bashed 8 so consistently. Same thing about Vista, never gave me any trouble yet people consistently bashed it. IE9 seems better over IE8 the same way 7 was better over Vista.

IE9 interface, while much cleaner than IE7-8... looks rather restrictive.
The address bar is on the same pane as the tabs? What happens when you hit 4~10 tabs?

My Acid 3 test results:
IE9: 95
Firefox Minefield 4.0bpre13: 97
Google Chrome 10: 99
Opera 11: 100

Don't know about Safari, don't need it on my computer

I have this other browser called Flock. Not sure where it came from. It scored 100.
I have Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate OEM.

[citation][nom]TheCapulet[/nom]On vanilla copies of Opera 11 and 11.1 on windows, half of the site's features just plain don't work, including comments. I've tried it on multiple PCs. That's not to mention the multiple formatting errors it seems to have with it's link to buttons. Funny thing is... it works perfectly on the linux version of Opera, and always has.[/citation]

This is a vanilla copy of Opera, and it works. It works everywhere I use it, including work. I haven't had a single problem with it at Toms Hardware. I don't know why your experience is completely different.

I have to use FF sometimes (yes, it sucks, but it's still better than IE and Chrome) like now because some sites that have live sports don't see Opera, but other places like Excite Mail, and my bank were incompatible with Opera (or Opera with them), but now they work fine.
