I’ve read a lot on this question but still no definitive answer unless I’m blind.

I have just switched from a GTX690 dual 8pin which was running from an 8 pin to dual 6+2 and it looked untidy. Upgraded to an RTX2070 super which as you all know is 8pin and 6pin. I’d rather not have a 6+2 for untidiness As 2 pins will be hanging about so can I just run 8-8pin and A 6-6pin or does it all have to go through one 8pin cable? There’s enough 8 pin slots on the psu to cater for it.

this question usually ends up straying to overheating cables

Solution
Ideally you don't want to use a splitter.
For the 2070....ideally you want to go from an 8 pin on the PSU to an 8pin on the 2070.....and a 6 or 8 pin on the PSU to the 6 pin on the 2070.
If the +2 offends you , cut it off.
I would not do that. Better to tuck the dangling +2 out of the way.
I think it looks better to have both the 8 and the 6 pin leads off the same cable.
But, it would work equally well if you uses a 6 and an 8 pin separate cable.
