Question Everything looks very odd on my new Asus VG259Q compared to my old VG245

Hey guys,

Maybe you can help me. I will start by admitting that I know nothing about colors/gamma/sharpness/contrast etc. You will ask me what any of that means on a monitor and I wouldn't be able to answer. I just go by what I am used to.
So I work from home and run a double monitor set up. Most of the time my pc is used for work (80%) and I game around 20% of the time. I used to have an Asus VG245 a 75Hz "gaming" monitor I picked up like 5 years ago as main one and another Asus monitor the model I don't even know (some regular 60hz monitor) as a side one. I decided to upgrade the old monitor by basically buying a 144Hz one and putting VG245 as my side monitor. I chose VG259Q due to the fact that this is Asus and both monitors will look identical side by side, but VG259Q will be far better for gaming (especially CSGO).

Now the monitor comes in, I hook it up via DP and turn it on. Put it with my trusty VG245 side by side and the colors/gamma/contrast are just off. Like I don't know how to describe it as I am horrible with knowing what means what. To me everything just looks way darker and brighter at the same time. Like black is more black, orange is more orange, yellow is more yellow etc. It's too freaking sharp comparing to my old VG245. Like it's not natural. Everything has too much "pop". Mind you, both monitors had exactly identical presets and settings in terms of everything as they have exactly identical menu etc. Its pretty much the same monitor, but one is twice as more expensive than the other. So I started playing with settings on VG259Q and no matter what I'd do, I cannot match VG259Q to what I used to have on VG245. All I can describe it by is that it is just "too dark". To showcase it better i made few comparison photos. I hope you like dogs.

There are two photos, scroll down for the second one

Left is my new monitor and right is an old one. I hope you see what I mean. The difference is so startling that I am not sure if it's just me being whiny and not understanding what I am talking about (ie VG259Q being better), but I am just so used to sort of calmer colors of my old Asus, that I find new monitor distracting. Even just working (typing, reading numbers) on a new monitor gives me some sensory issues as everything is just to sharp and dark at the same time. Like I am getting eye floaters. Even reddit on an old monitor has just a nice white background, on a new one its this greyish/bluish sort of glowing thing. What should I do?

How old are the panels at this point? You need to factor in that a panel used for many years will seem to be dull or slightly washed out when compared to a concurrent panel. Speaking of panels, not all panels are made off the same assembly line and often times there are silent updates to panels during a products lifespan. Silent updates being things like different panel sources/manufacturers or sourcing of materials from other vendors.

Is there a preset on the new panel whereby it's got an auto correct feature? I forgot what it's called on an Asus panel, perhaps you have it set to Vivid color mode as opposed to custom? See if the color temperature change aids with what you're looking for.

Make and model of your discrete GPU? BIOS version for your motherboard? OS version(not edition) seeing how you're on Windows 10?

Thanks for the reply. The old panel is four years old.

There are 7 "GameVisual" modes on the new panel. "Scenery, Racing, Cinema, RTS/RPG, FPS, sRGB. MOBA. There is no custom mode. You can adjust different things within different mode, but not all, and you can also reset each mode to it's default state. The old monitor has exactly the same modes/menu/everything except that it doesn't have a "MOBA" mode. There is no "Vivid color" mode on a new monitor, but there is a "Vivid pixel" mode which does nothing as far as I can tell. Apart from color adjusting options such as brigntess, contrast, saturation, color temp. and skin tone, there are image adjusting ones, such as Sharpness, Trace Free, Aspect Control, Vivid Pixel, ASCR, ELMB and Shadow Boost. Picking a different GameVisual mode either enable or disables a users ability to change image adjusting settings. For example, I don't know what "EMBL" is but its disabled across every GameVisual mode and I cannot do anything with it as it's greyed out.

Make and model of your discrete GPU? BIOS version for your motherboard? OS version(not edition) seeing how you're on Windows 10?

My GPU is Gigabyte RTX 2060, I have the latest BIOS installed on my MSI Z590 A.PRO. My Windows version is Version 21H1 (OS Build 19043.1415) Windows 10 64bit

The thing that I noticed with this monitor is that it makes everything more detailed to a fault. For example if I pause a youtube video on someone's face and then look at it on my old monitor, then all the wrinkles and shadows and any other little details will be sort of smoothed out. If I transfer the same image to my new monitor, everything will pop off and I dont know how to get rid of it. It's just too damn black. And yes I played around with color temperatures and image sharpness. Just a simple example, on my old monitor the text on this very forum looks smooth and letters have this nice calm dark grey color to them. On my new monitor the text is riggid and letters are pitch black. It's like it takes a color and cranks it up to a hundred. Maybe it's how it's supposed to be, but it's very distracting for me especially taking the fact that I use this computer for work 80% of the time.
