EVGA 500 Watt 80+ for single aftermarket GTX 980?

My PSU has a single 12v rail with 40 amps. Would that be safe to run a single aftermarket 980 on?

Most likely yes. Your PSU will be enough, however without knowing the rest of your system I can't say 100% that it is enough.

the rest of my system is miniscule. 4th generation haswell i5 eats up 84 watts, 1 SSD 1 HDD, 2 case fans.

If that is the case then the 500W PSU should be fine. Though if you plan to overclock or purchase a pre-overclocked card then the story might change.

500W PSU is sufficient

Even super-clocked edition requires about 160W according to EVGA
