evga gtx 970 ssc not working

I just got an evga gtx 970 ssc to replace my two gtx 550ti's in sli. Now when I boot my computer the fans on the 970 spin during the asus splash screen but when it gets to the screen to choose an operating system they stop , I'm dual booting windows 7 64bit and linux mint 64bit, and the 970 is no where to be found in windows. My psu is an ultra 650w model ULT-LSP650 and my motherboard is an asus M5A99X EVO. The psu only has 2 6pin cables so I had to use the 6 pins to 8 pin and 2 molex to 6 pin adapters. Is there a setting that has to be changed to go from sli to single card? I installed the latest nvidia drivers about a week ago with the 550's installed.

You have to reinstall the drivers for the 970, just uninstall everything related to nvidia, download the right drivers from here http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us and install them . It is normal that the fans spin at the start when you boot and then stop, thats how it should be.
