EVGA GTX 980 SC SLI on one monitor?

Im considering SLIing my GTX 980 with another one, but I only have one monitor and it only has HDMI currently. My question, will SLI performance boosts work through only one HDMI connection to one monitor? Ive always been under the impression you need dual link DVI for this to work.

(Im assuming this is a no, but I cant find a clear answer)

Of course you can. People do it all the time.

You just plug it into the first card.
The way SLI works is the secondary card disables its outputs and simply computes data for the first
