I'm just posting this in hopes I can run a couple power supply replacement choices by you guys. I'm a little rusty, so I wanted to make sure I wasn't making the wrong decision or simply missing something.

For the past year or so my power supply has been shutting off randomly. At first it was every few months and now recently it's been happening every two-three days for the last couple weeks. Because of this I did some very quick looking (Top 10 List, I know I know), and came down to two (although I would be open to other suggestions in the EVGA family as I have been out of the building scene for a few years):

EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G3

EVGA SuperNOVA 850 P2

Here is my current build: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/byFbhy

I want something of good quality, compatibility, and longevity. Hopefully not too different from my current PSU in terms of size so switching out the cables won't be too much of a headache. Any and all help would be much appreciated.

P.S I'm assuming the 2 vs 3 in the P2 (Platinum) and G3 (Gold) is just meaning that the G3 is newer?

Solution
At those prices, I'd say the G3 is a much better deal.

The EVGA units are made by SuperFlower, so great quality units.
SeaSonic is equal in quality though, so they'd be worth considering.

If you're sticking with EVGA, that's absolutely fine.... just ensure your loyalty doesn;t extend to the brand blindly, as they also have some pretty junk units in their product stack too (not at this pricepoint though )

I assume the 750W G2 is your current PSU?

That PSU should be, at most, about 4 years old at this point.
The G2's have a 10 year warranty: https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=220-G2-0750-XR

The P2 has a greater efficiency rating (Platinum), and the G3 is a little newer (but *only* Gold)

If you're going the "new" PSU route though.... we get a little screwed price-wise in Canada.
Looking at the G3 or P2, those are ~$200-$250 units (for the 850W flavors)...

While they're great PSUs, I'd be much more inclined (given the prices) to look towards SeaSonic's Focus+ lineup.
750W Platinum @ $150

850W @ $175

^^ Inclined to agree, at least at 850W. 750W strikes me as pretty appropriate.. ~around 400-500W max load (Depending on OCing), would keep you at peak efficiency. Although at Gold vs Platinum, for relatively negligible loads, it's not going to translate to huge energy savings either way.

I assume an RMA would take my system out of the game for a few weeks. And I don't have the case anymore. Not sure if that matters. As well, I'm going to be building a new system for my brother anyway and could RMA it when I start that project and after I receive my new one.

EVGA has an advanced RMA option, they put a hold on a credit card, ship you a replacement and once you get it you ship yours back in the box they sent theirs in. You don't package accessories etc.

You could buy a new PSU, but I would definitely be RMA'ing the G2. If nothing else, you'll get a replacement to reuse/sell.

There's a 10 year warranty, and EVGA are well-known for their customer service. Provided the PSU truly is the issue, then you should get a replacement within about a month.

Even better than I thought!

I found these on amazon:

The G3 is all the more cheaper I guess. Would going with the G3 be a better choice? And I want to stay with EVGA for my own stubborn and explainable reasons. Lowers my stress levels.

Really? Would I need the original packaging or do I just contact them provide the info I have and fill out the RMA?

Solution

No need for original packaging, you can send it back in the PSU box they sent the new one in to you (I have done that before with a GPU RMA) You just need to give them the SN and possibly a receipt for when it was purchased on their website.

"Downside" to this, you end up with double the modular cables you had before.

NCIX (where I originally purchased it) has gone out of business. I assume I could still RMA it if I provide a receipt from there?

They won't care if the place is out of business. That's not their problem. They just want to know your issue and what is wrong and why you are RMA'ing. When you contact them for an RMA, they'll send you a link to a form to fill out. I would suggest giving them as much detailed info as possible in advance about your issue as well as a copy/image of your purchase receipt. It will reduce a lot of back and forth Q&A requests.

I had to RMA a bad EVGA GTX 970 video card once. I don't remember the entire details of their requirements, but I do remember they said do not ship it back in the original box and do not send back the accessories that came with it. They just wanted it brown boxed. I did send mine back in the original anti-static wrap bag and fluffed up the box with as much bubble wrap as would fit. They accepted it.

EVGA is the best in the business when it comes to customer service which is why I like buying their products.

Thank you all so much for all of your help! I wish I could choose everyone as the best answer because honestly, they all were. I'll be going with the G3 as it does seem to be the better deal at that price point.
