SO i recently upgraded to the 500 gb evo 840 from my 128 gb vertex 4. I've done all the tweaks that i had in my previous build and one of the first things i noticed is the evo 840 doesn't boot up as fast and shut down as fast as the vertex 4. They're not drastic differences but they are in fact noticeable. It's not horrible but that is one of the things i read on and it seemed the evo 840 was in fact better in those situations but with everything i've done it's not the case. I've done all the same tweaks following the forums and ive done these tweaks for year with no problems. Also used the newest ahci driver just like i did with my vertex 4. Vertex 4 definitely seems to be slightly faster atleast with the type of things i do. Opening programs feel similar but the boot up and shut down are actually noticeable.

Also, every once in a while the evo hangs a little longer than normal at shut down than other times and i have no clue what that means but in my opinion i am thinking it has to do with the firmware on the evo 840. I do have the newest one. All i know is the last firmware that came out for the vertex 4, 1.51 made it perform absolutely awesome. As of now, i'm actually liking the performance of the vertex 4 a little more than the evo 840. I ran benchmarks on the evo 840 with the magician software and everything was basically advertised as the proper read/write speeds. Did anybody here jump from a 128 gb vertex 4 to a 500 evo 840? If so, has anyone noticed that the vertex 4 basically runs a little better than the evo 840. And also, i went with the evo 840 after reading about it and also it is still very popular but is there anything that beats the evo 840 or the vertex 4 out of the water? I would appreciate any comments. Thank you everyone.

the 840pro or older 830 are the faster samsung drives. the 840evo with its TLC flash lags behind a bit.

there are also faster drives out there then the ones made by samsung.

where the ssd drives by samsung really shine is in reliability. on independent consumer mtbf wear testing only samsung and intel came out on top. most manufacturers could not even meet their own specified mtbf values while those two exceeded them.

keep in mind that there are also some tweaks which could have a noticible effect on boot. asus quickboot and other similar programs for starters. or turning off some bios boot options.

i personally jumped from a pair of vertex2 80gb to a samsung 840 pro 512 in this computer. honestly i couldnt be happier. i use a samsung 830 256 in my laptop and my boot times are around 9-10 seconds with asus quickboot. my desktop computer with its older chipset cannot fully take advantage of a ssd so i'm at around 20 seconds but that also is not running any quickboot or other software.

after reading independent tests... i wouldnt ever buy a drive other than intel or samsung for my own machines regardless of whether you can get them cheaper or if performance numbers are better but that is my own opinion.

if you do not make alot of writes to a drive then you could certainly buy whichever drive is fastest on the market and have at it and likely have zero issues. i write a fair bit of content so that is not a comfortable solution for me which is why i prefer what i do.

just my own opinion for how i base my own purchases..
