Did you know that only part of the vPro platform is Remote Management but still everyone calls it vPro when it is actually Active Management Technology or Intel AMT. We have lots of organizations from very small to very very large enterprise and public sector using AMT as part of the remote management of devices. AMT can be enabled and managed through free software that can be downloaded from Intel. We also have community forums, open source tools, ISV enabling tools all available.
The most amazing part is being able to manage a PC across the internet, from a cloud tool, use power management to wake-up, boot to BIOS and see the whole process through a hardware based remote Keyboard Video Mouse.

Hi folks, thanks for being here.

Ransomware is in the news a lot these days, and has become a huge threat to end users across the board. I was wondering if you could elaborate a little on how vPro security features help protect against such attacks and is there different requirements for say business users vs. consumers?

One amazing feature of vPro is Threat Detection Technology and with the latest 11th Gen processors, this uses ML and CPU telemetry to detect Ransomware and Crypto Mining attacks... this feature is already enabled by Microsoft Defender straight out of the box.. so it really helps with the three parts of security, which is secure Below the OS, Secure the OS & Apps, and enable advanced threat detection... and of course other AV vendors are available :)

I'm curious about whether this technology will trickle down into consumer products too?

This seems to be aimed at business laptops but I would much prefer to work from my own machine when working from home. For me, having a device I use purely for work (currently an old laptop with an i5, 8GB RAM and relatively slow SSD) when I have other devices at home (a powerful desktop and laptop which is better than my work laptop) does not make sense. I currently feel that my job will end up creating more e-waste if we move towards requiring all employees to use company devices, especially when they have adequate devices at home which they are willing to use.

Thanks for taking the time, folks!

I have a couple of questions for Dan. Product development is an area I've had a lot of involvement over the years and siloed teams was always an issue. Have you found that with remote working becoming a necessity over the past year that we've gotten more efficient at linking teams together and are there any successful ways that your team has handled projects that would not have happened otherwise?

Also, do you think that the acceleration of adopting remote technology and methods would have occurred naturally?

Finally, as someone who always wanted to collect retro games but relocated too much to build a collection, I'd love to know how far back your collection goes and what's your pride and joy.

I don't know of any plans to add this technology to consumer devices. I think there are some business challenges to enabling this kind of solution to ensure personal and work data is properly compartmentalized and complying with various privacy laws. If that can be figured out, I think there are some interesting opportunities with this use case.

Don't disagree with you... however the challenge for any business is to ensure the business data, infrastructure etc is fully secured. That employees also have productive and stable devices that are suitable to support the apps and data that is required to be productive. The best way of doing that today is by having a known PC, built and secured from the hardware up. It builds that level of trust, predictability and allows IT to manage the environment securely. A couple of other points to consider. Would you be happy to have IT land apps on your devices, secure it and if you decided to leave or it was lost, they could delete everything on the device, as this is part of some orgainsations security model. Another point to consider is social equality and diversity, not everyone can afford a better device or would want that level of device / apps management.

And on the point of consumer devices there are a lot of security features built into those devices that underpin the Windows security model and optimise performance. These are a subset of the vPro platform security features.

We've made a couple of changes to help insure success here at Intel on the Intel Endpoint Management Assistant team that are good examples. First, we moved to an Agile development process. Part of this change is to address problems right away. If anyone has a problem, you get it out there and address it, no matter how big or little it is. This has helped to remove frustrations that may otherwise go unmentioned when you are working remote. We've also embraced videos calls. While being on camera all the time can be exhausting at times, it has helped us to maintain a high quality of communication.

Regarding the adoption of remote technology and methods, I think they would have occurred naturally, but at a much slower pace.

My oldest "official" console is a NES, but I do have a few Atari Flashback consoles as well. My pride and joy would probably be my OG Xbox. The pride comes from the fact that I had to crack it open after years of sitting to pull out that pesky RTC capacitor and fix a couple of bad traces. I didn't destroy it in the process, so I have a lot of pride in it.

What are your top three predictions for tech?

These are my personal predictions and don't reflect an official Intel position.

1. Hybrid work models will create a lot of challenges and opportunities for innovation around collaboration. For example, when you have a mix of staff in the office and staff that are working from home, organizations will need to address the simple challenge of meetings. Making sure that people in the conference room and those that are remote can all stay engaged from start to finish can be tough to do. I think we'll see a lot of innovation in this space in both hardware and software.

2. The use of technology in new areas will continue to grow. For example, when I started my career in the 1990's there was very little interaction between the facilities team that were responsible for our buildings and the IT department. Now, there is a lot of overlap between IT and facilities teams as more intelligent solutions are being introduced for building management. IoT based smart lighting solutions, networked HVAC management, and physical security solutions are driving a lot of convergence in these areas. There could very well be a day in the not too distant future where IT and facilities management merge, resulting in a team that somewhat like the engineering staff in Star Trek, responsible for the ships engines and computer.

3. I think that employee opinions & satisfaction of their organizations use of technology will become more important. The pandemic has shown us that remote work is sustainable, and that a significant number of people want to continue to do it. This expands the professional opportunities for a lot of people. IT departments will take customer satisfaction a lot more seriously as it can be tied to employee retention. I think this will also drive more companies to adopting new technology faster, to be seen as cutting edge and on top of trends to better retain talent in an even more competitive world.

What kind of product discounts do you get for working with Intel?

I assume you are talking about discounts on our own products. There is an employee discount program for purchasing things like desktop Intel CPUs, SSDs, and NUCs at a discount, as well as some other components for building desktop systems. I don't know that I can quote the exact discounts we get, but they save us a few bucks over retail prices. From what I've observed, it seems like the focus is getting our products out to our customers first. If there is enough stock, then some will get allocated to the employee discount program. I just checked, and there's no listings for 12th Gen Intel Core processors on the employee discount site, we're shipping them all out to customers. :)

There's a Chinese company making strides at reworking the old x86, I'm guessing to really learn what Intel and Amd already knows about cpus. Do ya'll see this competition as a good thing, something to help push you to maintain cpu superiority in the future? Or see it more as a threat to the superiority you'll expect to have in the future, when and if they get close to catching up.

What would you say is the biggest innovation or change you've seen since you started your career?

For me it's cloud based storage, which has become so normal we've forgotten there was a time it wasn't there. Do you think there's another game changer like this that is so simple it'll become standard?

For me, it's the whole cloud computing. It breaks the boundary of corporate intranet and allows the elastic provision of resources and services for employees, customers and consumers. It enabled a lot of the other innovations and usage models which we take it for granted today. It has also accelerated the development of other key technologies like big data and AI.

How do the Remote Management tasks overlap or interact with common admin tasks I might want to perform in a Windows environment? e.g. when offboarding a user I may wish to reset the PC to its factory state, which would certainly delete any VNC or similar client I might have naively been using to initiate the process, so if performing that remotely I wouldn't be able to track it to completion. [I'm not asking this from experience!]
Also in a Windows domain, where the server tracks all of the domain PCs and users, can Intel vPro leverage that knowledge (or vice-versa)?

That isn't something I'd ever really thought about and makes so much sense. Starfleet uniforms might not be mandatory, but definitely encouraged.

A big shift has been accessibility, there was a time when IT was considered impenetrable but now people tend to be able to troubleshoot a lot of their own issues as tech has become part of our daily lives. Security is such a massive part of that and the end user bears a burden of responsibility for it, is educating the workforce as much of a challenge as building secure systems and how intertwined are the two?

In the past I have worked IT with various small businesses. We utilized some hardware that had vpro features and would have liked to use them. However the toolset availability, information regarding integration, and upfront costs always seemed to create a barrier of entry that continued to push us back to software level solutions. What ,if any strides, have been made to be able to make this technology useable to the mom and pop level small business market?

Thank you for your answer. How has the growth of AI influenced Intel's decision making? Are there things that you're doing now that you wouldn't have considered before?

We have a number of tools that we've released to help with that. Intel Endpoint Management Assistant (Intel EMA) is the management tool that allows administrators to manage vPro endpoint devices both in-band (OS up and running) and out-of-band. We've also released tools to make the deployment of Intel EMA even easier for customers to start testing. Here are a couple links that describe the tools and deployment options:

Intel EMA overview:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/u...ology/remote-manageability-for-workforce.html

Intel EMA download:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/u...-endpoint-management-assistant-intel-ema.html

Intel EMA CloudStart tool for Azure:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/u...ant-intel-ema-cloud-start-tool-for-azure.html

The CloudStart tool for Azure deploys a VM in Azure and configures the deployment with a basic config so that users can beginning managing devices right away.
