Exalted: Volcanos?

So I was flipping through Scavenger Sons again, sort of
idly reading about the West.

And there are, of course, volcanic islands in the West.

Sure, I thought, need someplace to have your Exalts vs.
the Volcano God fights, right.

But how do volcanos work in Creation? It's not like Creation
is a huge oblate spheriod with a molten core. Where's that
lava in the West coming from? Some wacky underground river of
lava that flows from the South?

You already answered your own question. The Volcano Gods make them.

So you figure that somewhere in the Celestial Bureaucracy there's
some staffers going "OK, so we're going to need volcanos *here*
and *here* to keep everything running smoothly, get someone out
there to start that going."?

I wonder what purpose volcanos serve in Creation, then?

That's the case for /everything/ in Creation.

Controlled release of Fire-aspected Essence into the environment.

I'm thinking of the Ice Age Magic card that had the stream of lava
blasting in a straight pillar.

Being a God is all about special effects and pyrotechnics.

Plus, it's a way of an element entering the world. "Why are there
volcanos?" could easily be "Why are there trees?" or "Why is there
water?"

Also, it's cause lava's a many splendid thing.

Or perhaps a god who needs an island right *here* and doesn't have the mojo
to raise it himself contracts some fire elementals to build one the hard
way.

These are volcano gods. They roar their rage at all things not on fire and
smite the earth.

They're wicked cool.

AFAIK this has not been canonically addressed, but my guess would be
upwellings of fire-aspected Essence.

And hunger for pretty young virgins...

And they exist for cults to toss the afore-mentioned virgins into; and
for the PCs to rescue said virgins from, thereby receiving their
grateful affections (virginally, of course)...

Dex,
yet to see a fat, pasty, middle-aged male virgin sacrificed for
anything...^^

The creation of volcanos could be Creation's way to replace all those islands
being eroded away by the Wyld ocean in those parts. That area may actually
need more vulcanism, not less.

Pfah. Virgins are highly overrated.

In Greek myth, volcanoes usually cover some horrible, gigantic monster born of
Gaia and Tartarus. Ex: When the gods finally managed to defeat Typhon, they
dropped Sicily on him, and his fiery breath still comes up Mt. Etna. In the Age
of the Exalted, some volcanoes could imprison fiery monsters created by the
Primordials, still occasionally writhing and gasping in their death-agonies.

You could combine this with other explanations, too. The jailor god who
imprisons the monster is charged with prodding the beast when the world needs
more fire-aspected Essence, or he demands a virgin when the job gets too
tedious....
