Question Exceeding Max Motherboard Memory

Is the max memory supported that is listed in motherboard specs just the maximum guaranteed to work? For example, if I were to do a build on the ASUS Rog Zenthith Extreme with an AMD TR 2990WX... It states that it has support for up to 128GB of DDR. However, the chip supports much more. Is that 128GB just based on 8 dimm slots with the standard module only going up to 16GB? I would like to install 8 32GB modules and am trying to figure out if that will work.

I know they also list max supported memory frequency, which is often lower than what actually works. Wondering if this is the same deal. Thanks

No it will not work
The amount of ram supported by the motherboard is just that.
it is calculated by the number of dimm slots x the maximum dimm capacity the motherboard supports
It is very different from memory frequency
