Question Excel spreadsheets changing to Read-0nly

I have a user who is working in Excel spreadsheets. He is opening the spreadsheets from a network location that is on a Windows 2012 Server. If he leaves the documents open overnight when he comes in and tries to save them he gets an error stating the files are Read-only and cannot be saved. The spreadsheets are not opened by another user nor did the server reboot. Is this common for Excel? Is there a setting in Excel that would fix this issue.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with Excel. This is entirely a network issue. Likely a timeout issue on the share. It's really bad form to leave a file open long term like that anyway.

I agree with you about leaving files open. Is there set time for a share that is inactive to time out?

I'd rather say this is something within the server itself, like scheduled (backup, virus scan etc) job forcefully closing open files.

When this happens - go to the server, and check what files the server thinks are open.
