[SOLVED] exFAT Formatted hard drive works in windows but not on any mac, why is this happening?

I have a dell external hard drive whose casing failed. I removed the drive and put it in an external enclosure (which is mac compatible btw) but the drive was not recognised on the mac, but worked fine on windows (I have paragon HFS, so can read mac drives)

I took a backup of the data and using my windows machine formatted the drive to exfat, but the MAC still wont recognise it (multiple macs, 1 imac and two macbook pros) whereas none of my windows machine have any problem with the drive (2 laptops, 1 desktop).

It shows up in disk utitlity, but doesnt mount the main drive, nor will it format it.
Also it shows up as being empty but its not (i transferred part of the backup back)

What could the reason be and how can I fix it?

When formatting a exFAT drive under Windows you can choose the cluster size.
If the drive should be used with OSX you should not choose anything higher than 1024.
