Currently using an Asus Sabertooth 990fx/Gen 3. I run 2 videocards in sli (MSI GTX 670 in slots 1 and 3, the recommended placement for 16x performance). Problem: The second card completely covers the legacy pci slot, which is slot 4. I use the legacy pci for an older E-mu systems audio interface (an E-mu 1820m), which I still love, and it works great for audio production, even though it is old tech (jeez, they still sell on eBay for $230.)
To get around the problem, I’ve used various flexible extension ribbons, on both the videocard and the audio card to get them away from each other, but it’s always been problematic. I’ve got a Coolermaster full tower, so space is not the issue. But the ribbons are only so long and they are only so flexible, so I can never really create enough space to free everything up properly. Yanking on the extension ribbons too much disengages them. I have busted the fans on the lowest videocard in slot 3 TWICE and had to replace the fan, due to it smacking against the extension ribbon, which I simply cannot get out of the way. These ribbons are just a major pain, though technically they work.
Other than dumping the pci audio interface for a USB something-or-other, anyone know of any other kinds of solutions to this spacing issue? In this day and age, I just can’t imagine that a Gen 3 mobo hasn’t been designed to allow someone to use 2 videocards (to maximum 16x potential) and also utilize the legacy pci slot. It just seems….unimaginable.
Is there any other solution other than these flexible ribbons or decapitating myself? Anyone?
