Experience with degaussers

Hi everyone,
I have a small office specializing on recovering data from damaged hard drives and other devices. I want to buy degausser because one client asked me to destroy data from appr. 100 hard drives. I think that shredding is not very good idea. My question is: Does degausser destroy every hard drive and every device which is used with degausser?

My understanding is that it does not destroy the HDD, just the data contained therein. ROM firmware chips and other electronic components would be unaffected by strong magnetic field, only the magnetic platters would be erased. Afterward, the HDDs could be reformatted, partitioned and used again.
