Experiences with D3 half way through

Im really getting into this game and I had read a lot of reviews that
said the game was really linear and ran you on a set path. But ive found
that in a lot of areas there are rooms that you don't have to go into or
alternate paths that you can take to complete the level (the like one
where you can either go along the extended bridges or the other way that
I didn't take)

Also it is very immersive, fabulous graphics (im doing 800x600 on high
quality with a 9600xt), and great lighting. The flashlight was annoying
at first but now ive got used to it and I know when to change it and
when to not and really it makes for further immersion. The comments that
it should be taped to your gun don't quite stack up when you think that
you would have to have it taped to only one gun - so which one?

Ive gotten good at dodging the imps mostly but in some ways the hardest
enemies are the possessed soldiers!

Im upto the communications area and really getting into it.

In the last 6 months ive played CoD + CoD UO, HL2, Far Cry, Riddick EFBB
and a bit of GTA Vice City and this definitely stacks up with them.

The one downside is that I can't really see myself playing it over
again, however with HL2 I dived right in and went quite far into it the
same day that I completed it!

Just thought I would share my views that I think its definitely a good
game and well worth having a crack at.

I didn't think I'd ever replay it, either, but here I am, third time
through and on veteran. I'm still seeing some things the third time
through that I never saw before, and for all the complaints about being
"cramped in", those sure are some HUGE "cramped" levels. I'm counting down
the days, no, the hours for the add-on pack. That should be truly
remarkable.

Next time play on the hardest mode with the HUD and aiming reticle
turned off. Really makes it more immersive and challenging.

cheers for the note - I didn't even know you could do that! (i should
actually read through the manual - at least they gave a nice one unlike
the HL2 'insert' that you get!)

I went into it with the thought "this is what a modular living/working
system could be like, almost pure function." And so it was much easier
to accept as 'real' this way. The lighting...I bet there wasn't even
one single tungsten bulb anywhere on Mars, including in the flashlight.
Quartz/Krypton! Heh! The shadows were often thick enough to cut with
a knife. But like you, I got used to it and enjoyed the game in spite
of it.

Replaying it slowly. I started it off with Radeon 9800/FX5900, ended up
having to finish it with a Ti4600! Now have a 6800GT, and talk about a
world of difference :) Yep, worth a replay for this.

I saw it here in Canada yesterday at Walmart. $37.
