I'm sure there are many experts available on this forum and I would appreciate your advice on the following:

I have a Pentium D which is about two years old and is doing very well. Since memory is somewhat cheaper, I would like to upgrade from 1 GB to 2 GB of memory.

The system came with two sticks of 512MB memory. My plans are to remove the two 512MB sticks and replace them with two 1 GB sticks. (The system will only recognize up to 2 GB)

The computer came with PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM. The PC is a Sony Vaio VGC-RB52, Pentium D 2.80 GHz with a FSB speed of 800 MHz

Would it be best to replace the memory with two 1GB sticks of the same type memory OR can I replace them with 2 sticks of PC2-5300???

The reason for asking is twofold:

1- I don't have a clue about this type subject
2- The PC2-5300 is faster and cheaper. But, this is great ONLY if it is compatible!

Thanks so much!

The manual should tell you what RAM is compatible also try Crucial.com, I think they let you enter a prebuilt and will tell you which of their RAM is compatible. You're not likely to see a significant performance increase going with the 5300. Definitely get 2 sticks, i.e. 2 x 1GB for 2GB, get a kit
