explorer.exe loads to "my computer" folder

Hi, so everything was running smoothly on my windows 7 computer but then my mouse stops responding all of a sudden. I try to ctrl alt del but then nothing happened and noticed my keyboard stopped responding. I then proceeded to reboot my computer. Everything was fine until I passed the windows log in screen. I noticed a black screen with no desktop icons, start menu or wallpaper. Then "My computer" opens up without me doing anything. I closed the window and was back to the empty desktop. I then pressed ctrl alt del to see if everything was running. I typed in explorer.exe and then the "my computer" window opens up again. Now I'm stumped, how should I proceed?

Boot to safe mode and run both virus and malware scans. It definitely sounds like an infection:
