Hi,

As I mentioned earlier, I asked a sales person at the store whether I would
be able to access the express network with my America's Choice Family Plan
using only my airtime as my only charge. He said yes and all I need is a
data cable to do so.

Then I called customer service at Verizon and talked to some woman. She told
me the exact same thing. Then some data specialist calls back and says that
what the woman said is totally bogus. He said that only Quick2Net is for
airtime only, while Express Network reguires a seperate plan.

Then I said some people are able to access it anyway. He answered saying it
is a bug with picture messaging and if I do connect to the express network
anyway that I would be charged for it 25 cents a minute. In a serious voice
too, like he was trying to scare me.

Reading how much picture messaging costs it shows only 25 cents per picture
plus airtime if you don't have a picture messaging plan. Now considering
that being the case I think the guy is just trying to get more money for
Verizon with all of the NationalAccess plans.

Have any of you been using the Express Network with an American Choice plan
and if so what charges do you get? I don't have picture messaging so they
may charge me 25 cents per call I guess.

Not sure who you meant, but you can check the thousands of users on the
forums at http://www.irv2.com/ (RV Related)
or the mobile phone forums at http://www.howardforums.com (cell phone
related/WAP usable)

As for tech, not really, I am a computer person currently between contracts
(okay, temp unemployed) and live and travel in my RV between contracts. My
friend is a computer tech/salesperson that just added cell phone stuff to
his store along with computers. Since he is located in a rural area outside
of Spokane, there are lots of people that want to connect cell phones to
computers, my RV'ng (and connecting my cell phone to my computer) is a
perfect match.

I have America's Choice with NA-MOU. Quick 2 Net works for me, Express
Network gives an authentication error.

Okay I'm getting confused by all of these acronyms...

I assume that:
EN-MOU = Express Network Minutes of Use
NA-MOU = National Access Minutes of Use.

What is the difference between National Access and Express Network? Verizon
just told me National Access costs either $45 on a PDA or $80 on a laptop
for unlimited access to the Express Network. (They didn't know what Minutes
of Use was apparently.) But, they said National Access won't work in
non-Express-Network areas, so I would need Quick2Net service in the Extended
Network areas. ($35 /month for 150 minutes--don't think so!)

Still going strong in North Carolina. Three weeks ago something on my
account got messed up and verizon wireless data support had to 'reset my
account'. In that interval I could connect but not authenticate with
either Q2N or EN-MOU. Last year the entire area's data services went
down until I happened to notice and called... they don't seem to
proactivly moniter their switches/routers/etc. It took a 3rd/4th level
tech calling somebody else and a couple hours to fix it.

NationalAccess is the Express Network just with another name.

I am really confused right now.

All I know is that Get It Now runs on Express Network when I access it. I
know this because I downloaded a 200KB free demo program in 30sec. That is
about 6KB/s compared to Quick2Net which is about 1KB/s in best conditions.

So obviously the phone can get online with Express Network. The question is
whether it can do so with my laptop. I ordered a cable from rpiwireless.com
and will check when I get it. It would be a waste of $40 if I won't be able
to use it with the Express Network.

Though there have been rumors going around of some kind of audit of people
using the Express Network without having a National Access plan. Which I
don't, I only have America's Choice. I am on the plan with my family so they
would kill me if a hella expensive bill came or our service was terminated.

Yes, I have been using Express Network with a 300 minute America's
Choice Plan for almost a year now. Used it just yesterday with my
laptop. No additional charges other than minutes of use if during prime
time.

Yes, I'm on AC 300 + NA-MOU, have had it for about a year. I am online using
it right now and since it's after 9PM, it comes out of my free nights
bucket.

And yet it doesn't work for me in Sacramento. The userid and password
are the only differences in setup, right? (port speed would affect the
data transfer speed, but shouldn't matter for making the connection - I
have it set to 115200, which is the highest speed supported by my
Clie.).

There is usually a change in the initialization string for the modem, or
else a change in the "drivers" (actually an information file) that you
choose when you set up the modem port on your laptop. At least that is the
way it works for my Nokia 3589i, but the exact initialization string is
different for each phone; check the documentation for your phone.

Are you using serial or USB? And what type of phone and what is it set at
(RS232 or USB). When I switched from serial/qwk2net, to a new laptop only
with USB, I had change the phone to USB and my port speed to 230K

Well my plan doesn't say NA-MOU anywhere (do yours say anything anywhere)
but I am sure the phone has it as Get It Now works fast.
Does Get It Now use the same username and password as my laptop would use to
access the internet. It may be the case in which Get It Now uses a different
login and that the computer login doesn't work in reality.

I guess I just have to wait for the cable. I really doubt anyone would
enable NA-MOU for me as the techs are real ***holes at Verizon. Or maybe I
just got sales instead of a tech, but the guy knew what he was talking about
so I doubt it. See verizon sales people are not always dumb, no offense to
anyone who is.

The main thing is that my plan is around two years old, but I upgraded
myself to an audiovox CDM8900 without changing the plan a bit. Right now I
have free roaming anywhere in the U.S. regardless of whether it says roaming
or not. And night minutes start at 8:00pm. Such a plan no longer exists. It
is America's Choice, just old.

You do realize you need a phone or modem capable of 1x, national access, 3G,
or express network.
If your phone can't support it, heck it doesn't matter what verizon offers,
your phone won't connect if it doesn't understand it.


Here are the instructions for an LG phone, mod to your needs :
Verizon 3G/1X Data/Express Network
a.. Select the modem. Ideally you want the serial connection to the phone
to operate at 230400 otherwise you will suffer lower throughput
b.. The phone number is #777 (be sure to include the pound sign)
c.. The username is yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com (For example
5551234567@vzw3g.com)
d.. The password is vzw

Verizon Quick To Net/QNC
a.. Select the modem. There are no performance gains for the serial
connection to the phone being faster than 19200
b.. You should ensure there is a modem initialisation string of AT$QCMDR=2
in the modem configuration. (In Windows you place this by going to the modem
in the Control Panel and then Advanced, Extra Settings. Leave off the AT
bit - ie you should put $QCMDR=2 in the text box)
c.. Phone number is #777 (be sure to include the pound sign)
d.. Username is qnc
e.. Password is qnc

In most cases you have to change much more than just a login (depends on the
phone but sometimes driver speed, connection type, init string, and again
depending on the phone, sometimes switch between Communication type, can be
either RS 232 or USB

You don't. NA-MOU is a description of the effect, not a plan or option name,
and in any case, that option is not listed on the website at all.

As to your bill, it will be listed as an active option.

Login to vserv, (or look at your paper bill if you get one)
After you login in, click on statements, then on service profile. You will
see something like this (way better looking, but converted to text for

shows that you have the active option to use National Access on a Minutes of
Use basis (that's essentially where the term NA-MOU comes from).

One other note: It's a long story, but I had an America's Choice plan, and
switched to a local plan. In this case, the "National Access" feature stayed
on my account, even though this feature doesn't appear to be normally
available on local plans (well actually, even that is unclear).

Anyway, for odd reasons I actually switched back to AC and the feature of
course stayed. In any event it is possible to have the feature on a local
plan, but I doubt it is added automatically to those like it is for AC
users.

The dr offers that "yes", your plan will say National Access if you have it.
Contact customer service and ask that they "confirm" that you have the
enhanced services code NA-MOU, or go on-line to my account.

The rest of the story: Thought I might see the term national access if I
went to my-account, on-line. And yes, National Access was there. On the
on-line "printer friendly version" of your statement find:

The dr recalls: customer service told me a few times that if you tether a
phone to a laptop, as a "minimum" you should have purchased the mobile
office package; and then added the mobile web optional services to your
plan: Mobile Web by VZW with MSN® $4.99/month.

And yes, I know that many people don't pay anything extra, and that the
description of Mobile Web below doesn't say anything about tether of
computer to phone. Plans change, rules change, profit incentives change: go
figure?

The dr tried to establish when one might figure out that you need an extra
feature/service as part of your plan to get national access So I went
on-line and started a new self-service activation.

Not clarity, but a good chance that everybody is wrong and yet everybody is
right, depending upon when you signed up for your plan or promotion. This
is a mink hole: to easy to get into and stay there. We all know that this
can be, is, was, and may continue to be confusing. Try and get it at the
lowest possible price, and verizon always has the last and final say.

It will usually work just fine.....if VZW signs you up to the official
broadband plan. they make more money. broadband is part of most of the
plans in order for the picture phone plans to work. But you won't be able
to access the net via phone only unless you order MobilWeb...

Funny you should ask, as I just finished dealing with that very
screw-up...

My hardware: Kyocera 7135 PalmOS smartphone. 1xRTT ExpressNetwork/
NationalAccess capable, native Internet support with the appropriate
software installed and service plan.

I was on a NationalAccess plan, as that was the only way to get the
"real" net without an additional $25/month rider for only 5M of data.
I recently switched to an America's Choice so I can bundle my cellular
and eventual Verizon landline service into a single bill. Ever since,
I have been UNABLE to use the ExpressNetwork.

When I asked about switching to the AC plan, I asked several times and
was assured that I would be able to retain my data use, under
"NationalAccess-Minutes Of Use". Two days ago, I'm told that even
though NA-MOU is on my plan, I need to add Mobil Web at $5/month to do
this. It still does not work. I can now use the WAP browser to access
MSN content, but not my own sites and bookmarks. If I want my own WAP
enabled bookmarks, I need to actually sign up for a MSN Passport
account, and keep my bookmarks online. If I want to use email, I have
to use Hotmail's WAP interface.

I want to use my own stuff. I want to be able to tether the phone to
my laptop and use my own full-size applications.

The only way I can do this without spending more than it's worth is to
change back to a NationalAccess plan.

If wasn't using a PDA/Phone combo, the America's Choice/Mobile Web
setup would probably suffice.

Hi again,

Well I checked my bill on my new cell phone and found that National
Access with Msg-Pix Basic is enabled. So I guess once I get the cable
I'll be surfing the net.

In the meantime my other phones in the familyshare plan have roamer
toll and home toll features, while the new phone does not. What do
these two things do anyway.
