Extenders for "mere mortal" Canon EF zoom lenses?

Hi All,

I see that Canon sells some extenders
(http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcategor
yid=154), but they only work with the fixed length lenses over 135mm, or a
few of the L series zoom lenses. Click on the 1.4x extender to get the
listing, and 2x extender has the same requirements.

What about those of us with some "mere mortal" lenses like the EF 75-300mm
f/4-5.6 IS USM? Can you put an extender on that? Maybe by Sigma or
something? Or am I stuck with it as is?

Thanks!
-Josh

To be honest, they ALL ruin the image, blured edges, blown out colours,
intermitent auto focus
buy a longer lense like a tokina atx 400mm f5.6 which go for about £200
or sell up and buy the sigma apo 50 -500, it really kicks some arse in
quality, I experimented with a tokina atx pro 80-200 f2.8 and a 2x
convertor, I found the images were better cropped out in the software
than with the convertor, hence it was a waste of time

You can use almost any of the other brands, if it's for the Canon mount,
but frankly, using a teleconverter on the 75-300 IS not going to pull in
much more detail than the lens does without it, at a great cost in the
photon budget. A teleconverter can only magnify what a lens is doing.
If the sensor is the bottleneck, then a teleconverter will spread a
smaller area of the focal plane out over the sensor, and more detail can
be recorded than without it. If the lens itself is the bottleneck, then
the teleconverter can only magnify its limitations. On top of
magnifying the limitations, you will get further deterioration of the
image due to having less light to work with, and the need to shoot at
half the shutter time to compensate for the increased visibility of blur
from lens shake.

The 75-300 IS is soft at 300mm, and falls into the latter category.

A sharp lens with a quality converter can give results almost as good as
the lens by itself.

You might want to try one that costs more than $60.

Blown out colors? Where did you get that from?

>intermitent auto focus

That depends. In any event, it is usually understood that you will give
up auto-focusing.
