Hello everyone. I am wanting to extend my home wifi signal to my shop that is about 300-350ft away from my house. Im only wanting to be able to listen to pandora/internet radio when I'm out there working so I dont need crazy internet strength. Lately i've been using my phone but have been going over on my data usage. There are zero obstructions from my house to the shop with no trees or anything like that.

I've also been reading up on these powerline networking adaptors. My shop is connected to the main electrical box of my house so does that mean that these units could carry my network signal to the shop through its electrical connection to the house or is my mindset way off lol

Just looking for an easy cost effective solution to this. Thanks for any and all of your help.

From what I've researched those range extenders are not able to reach the distance I am needing. And I thought they dont play well with steel buildings (which is what my shop is)

Yes, a powerline adapter kit can be a possible solution, but purchase from a vendor with a good return policy. These adapters can provide a good quality connection, but it's impossible to tell how it might work across any given electrical system. GFCI breakers, opposing power legs, wire condition and distance play roles in connection quality. Some powerline adapters also double as wifi access points.

A wireless bridge is another alternative, but may be a little more challenging to set up. A powerline kit may prove easier and more cost effective considering your application.

Thanks for everyones help I just ordered a TP link powerline adapter kit which should get here on Saturday. Will give it a try and report back my findings. Hopefully it will allow some faint signal in the shop!

Cantenna is a old solution when outdoor bridges used to cost a fortune. When you can get a pair of outdoor bridge units for less than $100 that can go many miles why would you mess around with some hack that may not work.

Do not even consider a extender for your solution. All these do is take the signal and repeat it thus degrading it. If it does not have strong signal it will just repeat a poor signal making it even worse. You would need to place this device 1/2 between the 2 locations so it can get good signal from both ends. This does not work real well when there is no power at the 1/2 way point.

I would try the powerline units first. If that does not work then look at point to point bridge devices from ubiquiti or engenius. As long as you have clear line of sight they will work extremely well at that short distance.

In theory, a powerline adapter would work if it's connected to the same circuit as the rest of the house. In practice, it's hard to tell what else might be in the way, or how much degradation you'll get over that distance. They say powerline can work 200-300 meters away, but at any distance like the one you're talking about, that's one more variable to roll the dice on. Worth trying though as the simplest and possibly best option.

If that's not giving you what you want, then a point-to-point outdoor bridge is the way to go. Especially since the way is clear of obstacles, that should give you a fighting chance.

Update on my little project extending my wifi to my shop that is roughly 300ft away from my house. I went with the TP-Link AV500 powerline network adapter. Great news it works perfect. I get great connection now in my shop. I'm able to stream youtube videos quickly and listen to my internet radio just as I wanted. This cost me a total of $52. Thanks for all the help.
