I have Linksys WRT54GL wireless router on the top floor so the devices in one part of the bottom floor (most away from the source) are having trouble staying connected let alone getting good connection. What would be good solution in my case? I'd like something wireless, don't want to drag cables downstairs.

I would try using a N-router.

or you could try upgrading the firmware using DD-WRT firmware which has an option to increase the output signal. However, I don't recomend to set it higher then 50% since it might become to hot

What about range extender: WRE54G?

Or would N-router be more beneficial? I'm not so sure it would make the situation in the problematic part of my house any better.
