Hi All,

I have an Xfinity cable wifi account but the nearest hotspot is out of range (in the street, a couple hundred feet from me.) Will a wifi extender work? I just want music streaming and the occasional youtube on my tablet.. Any good hardware recommendations?

Keep in mind I do not have physical access to the Xfinity access point. But I have a password. Does this matter?

Technically, you could enable Internet Connection Sharing on the netbook, but you would still have a range to the network issue. You could also try a wireless adapter with a directional antenna.

Because I'm at work! The hotspot is just outside my building. It would be great if I could use something like this

I have a different model of Netgear extender that I use to bridge a gap in my house where I can't run wire and it works great for that purpose. However, the xfinity "guest" networks won't allow connections with devices that can't authenticate with a xfinity username and password. The extender doesn't have the means to do that.

Interesting. Thanks for that info. (Drat!) What would it take? I also have an old Win XP netbook I'm not using. Is there a means to turn it into an extender?
