Hi guys

Last night my flat mate plugged a device into the same wall plug used by me 1tb Transcent Storejet. The light that is also plugged into that socket flickered twice, and the external enclosure rapidly powered up and down twice simoultaneously as it lost and regained power.

The drive now says:

"you need to format the drive before you can use it."

when I click cancel it says:

"H is not accessible"
Data error - cyclic redundancy error

I have tried Active Partition Recovery on both quick and super scan, but drive still inaccessible.

There is 800gb of stuff on there, everything I have ever saved and cherished for almost 9 years ended up on there after I bought it.

Any guidance?

I know that some hd repair people will actually take the platter out of that hd to read and copy what is left. Because of the CRC error there are probably some damaged files. And why would it hang w7 on startup? It shouldn't be messing with w7 if it doesn't have w7 on it. Try and make your primary hd(the one with w7) the primary startup disc in bios. But really, i don't think it would change anything if you got into w7.

There are ways to get around CRC errors. And by that i mean you can ignore them the errors and recovery "hurt" files. But hey thats better than nothing. If it is really really precious. Start calling up HD recovery people in your area. Ask them if they are just going to do a recovery based on ignoring the crc errors or by actually taking the platter out. If all the people you call are just going to ignore the crc errors i would just do it myself.

Good luck. Hope some other people respond to this.

I had the same thing happen to my Comstar Platinum external hard drive....It came up as "you need to format the drive before you can use it"......
I just shut the drive down for 2 minutes and powered down the pc...then rebooted the pc and after the system was back on the desktop I just plugged in the external and powered it up and it came back...all files intact!

By the way, you can download the partition recovery software on websites of easeus, it's completely free!
