external h/d not recognized on my laptop

Toshiba ext H/D pin: PX160M-1HL0 no longer being recognized on my HP probook 4540's i5 laptop when i switch it on. I have tried restarting my laptop and also tried a different data cable but to no avail..... there is power ( blue light comes on) but the laptop does not see the unit. Is there anything else i can do at home to get it to work?
