External hard disks as reliable as internal ones?

Guys,

Thinking about moving all of my data off my internal hard disk and on to an external one. I don't have any experience of making this switch, so would appreciate your feedback.

The plan is to move all my critical data on to the external drive, with backups also on an additional external one.

If okay, is there anything I should look out for when buying an external drive (like manufacturer, specs, etc)?

Thanks in advance.

Inside, they are exactly the same drives.

3 considerations for externals:
1. The external case itself adds another point of fail. And some of them have a built in encryption scheme. So if it does die, you can't just take the drive out and use it elsewhere. Your data is locked in that encryption scheme.

2. An external drive is far more likely to get damaged from knocks, or falling off the desk.

3. It will be slower.
