I have seagate 1 TB hard drive which i've bought last 5 month ago. It went smoothly, and I havent encounter a single problem since then but recently, a few issue began to appear. One of those is that i cant rename it. Before I've encounter the problem, i've manage to rename it a few times but somehow, it rename it self back to "Local Disk (E:)" and since then, I can't rename the external again. Another problem, would be the unstable transfer speed. Normally, my transfer speed is about 98 mbps to 100mbps but it began to slow down and sometimes unstable. It reach a peak rate of 85 mbps but will eventually go down to 2mbs and then, goes up again. though even with recently problems, I'm still able to use my hard drive but i want to know its a sign for a in-pending bigger problem.

Try rename via Disk Management.
Or Open disk management under computer management console right click the affected drive and choose "Change drive letter and paths", now choose "Remove" drive letters.

nope.. currently using window 8.1

it didn't work 🙁

1. Ensure you are running as administrator, try rename it in explorer.

If not working, try this:
1.Run cmd.
2.Type chkdsk ?: /r and press Enter (with space after the full colon)
3. The ? is the drive letter of the external drive.

This one is to change using autorun.inf:
1. Change you known file extensions in View to "show hidden files and folder". - purpose is to rename the extensions. http://www.ricksdailytips.com/view-hidden-files-and-folders-windows-8-1/
2. Insert the USB drive that you want to rename and open.
3. Search for autorun.inf then delete.
4. Right click on an empty space, click/tap on New and Text Document, then rename this file autorun.inf and press Enter.
5. Open the autorun.inf file, then type the following (press enter once done):

[autorun]
label="type name you desire"

6. Unplug and plug in the USB drive to apply.

If still not happen and you wanna change only the name of the drive, use another pc and rename it.

For some reason, i cant create a new autorun.inf. Everytime i do so, a message pops out saying "There is already a folder with the same name as the file name you specified. Specify a different name" which is odd since i've already deleted the previous autorun.inf..
i've tried your last option, renaming it with another pc but it wont do. I still can't rename it.....
About the cmd, I'll try it later and inform you if it work.... thnx for the reply anyway..

"There is already a folder with the same name as the file name you specified. Specify a different name".. You cannot make this file if there another file of the same name. Maybe it was hidden. Have you tried this?

yep.... but the problem still persist

How about Turning OFF UAC
To turn UAC on or off:
- Open User Account Control Settings by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel.
- In the search box, type UAC, and then click Change User Account Control settings.
- Do one of the following: To turn off UAC, move the slider to the Never notify position, and then click OK.

Once turned off, try renaming again.

Didn't work... I'll probably do the "chkdsk" tomorrow and hopefully it would finally solved this problem....

Hey guys, I've been following this thread for a little while, I have almost the same issue with an external wrelss hard drive : Seagate Wireless Plus originally 500 GB which I opened and upgraded the internal hard drive to 2 TB extracted from a Seagate back up plus slim external model: the issue is the upgraded Seagate Wireless Plus when hooked to the computer through USB 3.0 displays two names :
- First: is local drive name showing in widows explorer which I can rename to whatever I want
- Second : USB DEVICE name ( Devices and printers or USB mount/unmount windows tool at the system tray ) carries the name of the 2TB upgraded drive (seagete BUP SL = seagate back up slim) which is impossible to rename and seems to be attached to the hard drive firmware or circuicity ? or maybe a hidden autorun file although drive was formatted thoroughly.

As a note when the same Upgraded drive is hooked to a Windows 10 machine it shows as USB DEVICE with a slight different name from the one seen in windows 7 but still not accessible to editing.

I found a thread that could help with our issue here, did not try it solution yet : How to change the DISPLAY name of a Drive (NOT the drive letter) http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1687510/change-display-drive-drive-letter.html
which the acceped resolution was 4. Execute the following command to make the autorun file visible: attrib -r -s -h autorun.inf then edit it to change the name of the drive !
