External Hard Drive doesn\'t Show up in my computer

hi i just bought a new external hard drive and i installed it and everything and started adding movies to it from my laptop.. i later unplugged it and came back later tried to open it up and watch a movie but it doesnt show up.. it recognizes it but it doesnt show up in MY COMPUTER. and ive tried to go to device management and go through that process but that solution doesnt help. it shows up as the device is working properly. please help
