External hard drive fails to read

my external hard drive light up when plug in but not showing on my computer i have all my music on it what can i do

it gives a little funny sound like it's going to start up and just stop

Is it connected through USB? If so, try plugging it into different USB ports on your computer. Also, if you can plug it into a separate power supply adapter, try that. Generally, however, if a disk drive starts making new "funny noises" it indicates that the drive is dead or dying.

I'd also try plugging the drive directly into the wall. Some power strips have been known to go bad & probably won't supply the right power.
