External Hard Drive Help

I'm wondering, is an external hard drive basically something I just plug in and it works as a normal hard drive?

Yes, it's just a large size/capacity pen drive. The only difference is the pen drives are flash drives, the ext HDD is mechanical.
It is a portable HDD used for huge back-ups, save imp files, etc. just connect it through USB port and access data. Simple.
