External Hard Drive Help

Is an external hard drive basically something that I can plug into my computer and it will show up on how many gb i have on my computer?
(I only have 18GB hard drive space left on my internal one)

External drive is basically additional space. Plug in and backup data you don't wanna loose, if your internal disk fails.

To extend space, you should buy an internal hard drive.
This hard drive must have the plug which the main board has. IDE or SATA.

So say if I had a 1tb external hard drive and i plugged it in my pc would have 1018gb space? (18 from my internal hard drive)

Please don't bump threads here in Tom's - particularly after only half an hour.

Your new disk won't just turn up in My Computer but in Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management it will show as Disk 1. Disk zero is already there.

Right click it and select Initialise if it doesn't already offer to do it. Then, again from the right click menu, you can give it a drive letter and partition it as you wish.

I suggest you also look in Microsoft Help on how to move My Documents to the new drive and free up some space on your system hard disk.
