External Hard Drive Issue

When I look at photos on my external hard drive they have colored lines running through them. I was told it is a reading error on the eye of the hard drive. Told in order to get the pics off without the lines in the pics would be to remove the outer cover and use a different type of cable to read data than the one on the drive. Can anyone assist me with this? I have tons of family pics that I need to get off of this thing. Thanks
