[SOLVED] External Hard Drive missing storage?

I bought 10TB WD EHD

Right off the bat once plugged in to PC/Wins It said I only had 9.09TB almost a whole 1tb gone right off the bat but ok...

I transfered a file that was 2.42TB to the external hard drive and things got weird

Now it says the size of the file is 2.21tb not 2.42 but it also says size on disk 3.58tb not 2.42 How come?

Also the original file contained 2,128,289 Files, 114,698 Folders and the copy on the Ex HD says 1,836,452 Files, 108,224 Folders

So somehow I have less files and folders yet the size on disk of the copy on the ex hard drive 3.58tb is larger than size on disk of the original 2.42 ???

Finally like I said when I plugged this 10tb EHD into my PC Wins 7 64, it said 9.09tb which I said "OK" but now it says 4.97TB available of 9.09TB That's way more than the file that says it's size is 2.21tb size on disk 3.58TB

Did something go wrong? Should I delete the file and try again, maybe pieces at a time instead of one massive transfer?

Everything is correct with drive capacity there.
10TB drive capacity actually is 10'000'000'000'000 bytes.
10'000'000'000'000/1024/1024/1024/1024=9.095 GB

About those folder sizes, file counts - something is wrong there.
Could be some hidden files inside don't get properly copied over.

Yeah that's why I was like "OK" with the 9.09GB stuff but what happened after that just seems all wrong.

So I guess I better return to zero on this and see where I made my mistake. I think I just needed to be talked down from the ledge here lol

Yeah so I erased the file and instead of doing a massive transfer, I've been trying to bring over bits at a time and once again things are coming over larger than they originally are, though on the surface it says the same amount of files and folders , so I'm assuming there must be hidden data coming over.

Example: even a small file, one that should be 3.7mb size on disk gets copies over as 7 mb size on disk.

I can see even bringing over small batches of files at a time, I'm still going to run into the same trouble I did with the massive transfer

Can someone point me in the direction of figuring out what these hidden files and folders are? How I can make it so the file size of the copied folder to a new external hard drive matches the file size of the original folder on the original external hard drive.

Yeah it's nuts so the 1st batch of the ultimate 2.42tb file I brought over was 7 folders that should have been 36gb instead its63gb size on disk

What mistake am I doing that is making the files and folders almost double in size? I'm googling the hell out of this right now as obviously this project of backing up data to a new external hard drive is at a halt until I can figure out how to make a even steven transfer without ballooning the size on disk of the copied folder in comparison to the size of the original folder.

I mean an example: a file on original hard drive might be

Size: 2.61gb Size On Disk: 2.62gb

the copied folder on the new hard drive

Size: 2.61 Size On Disk: 3.08gb

Clearly something is happening while making folders copies/transfer from the old hard drive to the new hard drive

I'll head back to google and using the search engine here on Tom's BUT if someone knows what's happening, you'll really save the day.

This time I tried to use a transfer program called Teracopy

Tried to bring over a folder

The original folder said

size: 2.61 GB (2,812,587,399 bytes)
size on disk: 2.62 GB (2,813,759,488 bytes)
contains 676 Files, 14 Folders

The copied folder to new ex hard drive says

Size: 2.61 GB (2,812,587,399 bytes)
size on disk: 3.08 GB (3,311,403,008 bytes)
contains 676 Files, 14 Folders

Now I tried to do it myself and I've tried to use a transfer program and both attempts are bringing up more size than the original

I think I figured it out. I noticed the drive is exFAT and I'm assuming the 1st hard drive must be NTFS . So if I make the new hard drive NTFS, should that do it? I guess I'll go search for that idea and see whats what.

And yep and duh and resolved.

I had to change the external hard drive from exFat to NTFS to match the original external hard drive and now I'm all set.

I did it!! lol
