External hard drive not initialised after changing drive letter

I plugged a hard drive that hadn't been used in a little while into my computer yesterday, and it was working fine. However it somehow managed to steal the drive letter off another hard drive that has all my movies etc. on it, which Plex is linked to. So I reassigned the drive letters on both hard drives so I wouldn't have to reset my Plex account back up again.
However after restarting my computer one of the hard drives is now coming up as Unknown - Not Initialised. I've obviously searched and seen a few ways this can be fixed, however this hard drive has the majority of my photos on it, so I'm not going to just initialise it or format it. (I do back it up, but because it has been a while since I've used it, I'm not sure how recently it was backed up, and I'm not ok with losing any photos.

Is data recovery my only course of action here?

It shows up in Disk Management, but with no information on the right hand pane. It also shows up in Device Manager.

Thanks for your help.

Won't selecting Initialise remove all of my data?

ETA - Actually Initialise is greyed out and I can't select it - the other option reads "Offline" and when I select it I get the error "The device is not ready"

My internet is really slow tonight, but I just edited my above reply to add this - Initialise is greyed out and I can't select it - the other option reads "Offline" and when I select it I get the error "The device is not ready"

ughh, I feel like a bit of a fool. I unplugged it, and plugged it back in, and now it's working... I assumed turning the computer on and off would have done the same thing, but apparently not...
