[SOLVED] External hard drive only showing up in devices and printers

Hi I just replaced my ssd with a new one (and new windows 10) and wiped my hdd and out of nowhere my WD my passport is not showing up anymore.. or at least not entirely?

It shows up when I go to devices and printers or in the device manager but I can't seem to access it...
I checked the drivers, tried different usb ports, uninstalled the device etc etc.
I can't try another cable because it doesn't use a regular usb cable (not sure what it is though but I don't have another one like it). But it would surprise me if it wouldn't work anymore about an hour after it worked perfectly. I really need to get this solved because there's a lot of files I had saved on my old SSD on it that I need to transfer

It does make the "device plugged in" sound...

edit: I tried it on my laptop too and it seems to do the same thing there

you MAY need to import the foreign disk in disk manager before you can access it.
open disk manager and check the status of the drive after you plug it in.

Isolate software of hardware:
Boot to a USB drive with linux on it. grab a USB drive, a copy of rufus and a linux distribution.
http://distrowatch.com/ has tons of differing linux distributions and download links. I personally am fond of linux mint with cinnamon.
https://rufus.ie/ the utility used to extract the ISO file to the USB drive.
use rufus to extract the selected ISO to the thumb drive. it will make the drive bootable and you can run linux from the drive once done.
Reboot into linux and proceed to test the hardware. mount the drive and see if linux can see the files on the drive. linux does not obey windows permissions and often can access what windows cannot

It doesn't show up in the disk manager at all though.

I should mention that I have 0 experience with Linux but I might give it a try if it could help me.

not being seen in disk manager means windows is not seeing it at all.

I would still try linux, nothing to lose right? mint is very easy for windows users to navigate.

it may be that the disk has failed and only the enclosure is communicating. can you hear the disk spinning? can you hear the heads actuating at all?

No, it's as quiet as always

I'll try the Linux way after work today...

I would try the WD diagnostics on the drive.
I predict the drive has failed.
