Question External Hard Drive Slow Write Speed

I have a WD 2TB External Hard Drive and I am currently transferring some blu ray files from my laptop to the drive but the file transfer speed is extremely slow. It is currently transferring at 8MB/s. I stopped the transfer and tried copying another file to the external drive and it transferred at 50MB/s. Is there something wrong with my external or is it just the blu ray files?
The blu ray files are located on my laptop hard drive and the files I transferred at 50MB/s were mkv files.
Any assistance appreciated

I transferred the files to the same folder

The source of both files came from my downloads folder on my laptop but I will stop the transfer and move the location to see if it affects the transfer speed

try defrag your drive. the file might be fragmented

When I changed the folder location and transferred a single file the file speed transferred quicker momentarily at 50MB/s then the file speed dropped back to 8MB/s
