Hey everybody.

I've been using this external hard drive for a long time (maxtor pn 9nz2dg-500) but recently I tried plugging it in to my computer, so I put the power cord in no problem, then I try plugging a usb cable to the external hard drive only for me to not actually put the plug into the socket but actually push the socket back in. The plug can't reach far enough in the external hard drive's case to connect to it. What is the best course of action here? Do I take the entire case off and just use the insides? Do I try and yank the socket out with some tiny pliers? I really need the files on the external hard drive so just replacing it is no option.

Thanks.

Jaap

Hi Jaap,

Depending on the case I would dismantle it, keep the drive, and either install it internally or get a new external hard drive enclosure to put it in.

Since the socket has been damaged in your old enclosure I'd be suprised if it would work correctly now, even if you could manage to bend it back.

Edit: You wouldn't have to break to bank getting a new enclosure that would work, especailly if you're using USB. Here's a link below to a well reviewed USB 3.0 hard drive enclosure for $25:

**ALSO, if you decide to dismantle your current broken enclosure make sure you take steps to reduce the chances of giving your drive an electrostatic discharge!
