I'm in the market for an external hard drive. I was planning to go with a fire wire connection, but have begun to think of adding a USB 2.0 connecter to my computer to let me use the cheaper and faster USB 2.0 drives. I have a three year old Sony Viao. Can I upgrade to USB 2.0?

Yes, just get a USB2.0 pci card. Also, if you're using Win9x/ME, make sure the card comes with USB2.0 driver for your OS.

USB 2.0 is the way to go. Firewire is too unused by folk. What's more the drive should be backward compatible, so you should be able to use it in USB 1 environments too.
