External hard drives starts and then stops after 5s

Western Digital "My book" 4TB external drive:

Will start for about 5 seconds, transfer about 100 files (running at 50-80mbs) and then suddenly stops. Goes to 0mbs and file transfer ceases entirely.

I've had an error come up one time saying that I have run out of memory [Windows 10]

I have 16gb of RAM and plenty of hard drive space. Both drives in question are formatted to NTFS.

Tried downloading to my mac and the same problem persisted.

Any suggestions?

If your external hard drive comes up with the same issue on two different computers, the problem might be with the drive itself.

A quick online search can suggest you several free tools to diagnose the hard disk. Here you can fine a few tips to do so.
